GROWING UP IN A SMALL TOWN IN SOUTHERN OREGON YOU HAVE LIMITED OPTIONS: START A FAMILY, DESTROY A FAMILY, OR GET REALLY CREATIVE. GRANTS PASS, OREGON ISN'T WHAT ONE WOULD CALL AN ARTISTIC COMMUNITY, SO WHEN AN UNEXPECTED MUSIC SCENE BEGAN TO BREW IN THE STICKS, IT WAS INEVITABLE THAT WE WOULD FIND EACH OTHER.
I WAS 14 AND I HAD MOVED TO GRANTS PASS FROM SANTA MARIA, CA. I WAS BORN IN GRANTS PASS, BUT i hadn't really been back in years. immediately i began to look for a band, i jammed with a few guys here and there, but couldn't really get anything started. i had jammed with this one guy nathan, who was actually pretty good, the only thing was he wanted to wait until his brother (who was also his drummer) moved up from l.a., before getting really serious. I couldn't wait, and i moved on. after nearly a year of looking, i gave up trying to find a band and just started one. me and the kids in my group were getting to know each other, the bass player (jed) and i ended up becoming best friends. when my mom told me we were moving to seattle i had a fit, and managed to talk her, and jed's mom into letting me stay with them. one night we went to check this band "ad" out, the bass player was friends with jed or something. this was the first time i ever saw steve. he was playing guitar in the band, wich actually also had russ and joe from inflikt. after seeing this band i new we needed to better. pretty much the next time i ever met steve, he told me his band had split up, and i needed to come hear his new band. I think the show was that weekend, and i went to check them out. his new singer was chris jack. this was a short lived band and i didn't get to know chris yet. over the next couple years me and steve became pretty good friends. we would jam in his bedroom and joke about how we could never be in a band together because we were both to hard headed. steve was in this band kaos, and they were getting this new drummer, he was this guy nathan's older brother from l.a.! he had finally moved up, and ended up jamming with steve! shortly after that they quit kaos to start there own group "grimm 8". the original singer from grimm 8 was brian houghton of bleeder. brian quit grimm 8 and moved to seattle with me to start a group with these guys we had met while living breifly in the seattle/tacoma area. we were up there about a year, and things were a real struggle, seattle wasn't all its cracked up to be as far as musics concerned. so when steve called me and told me they (grimm 8) now lived in portland, and they were looking for a guitarist, i had to jump at the opportunity. i moved to portland, and got situated. we changed our name to prole, and cut a disc, toured, had management, it all seemed fine and dandy until our singer quit. he couldn't handle it any more, the fights, the management, it was too much. well fuck, now what do we do? we talked for probably a month about what are options were. brian houghton stepped in for a couple shows, but we didn't feel it was quite right. finally we decided to give chris jack a call. we wanted to keep with a southern oregon line up. he ended up saying yes, and we started to get things back in order. we started having constant dis-agreements with our bass player. he went his seperate way, and we got a replacement. our new bass player was talented, but an emotional wreck, and that disinigrated. we were out of options, we had a good chemistry between the four of us but couldn't quite get there with anyone else. i told the guys i was thinking about trying bass, they didn't really hesitate much, and i made the move. we changed the name, dropped all our songs, and started over..."
